Paddy farmers to be compensated for crops damaged by rain
The hundreds of acres of paddy fields in the Hambantota district, which were close to harvesting, have been destroyed due to the recent heavy rains.
These paddy fields which had been cultivated successfully have now been seriously damaged due to flooding.
Agriculture Minister Mahinda Amaraweera visited several areas including Tangalle, Netolpitiya to observe the paddy fields damaged by the rain on Saturday (9).
The Minister said, “At least 2,000 acres of paddy fields in the Hambantota district were destroyed by continuous drought for a period of seven or eight months. But although the farmers managed to save some paddy fields with great difficulty, hundreds of acres of paddy fields have now been destroyed by the rain.”
“I know that the farmers took care of these paddy fields with great difficulty. Therefore, we are working to provide them with proper compensation for this crop damage. I spoke to the Agriculture and Agrarian Insurance Board today,” the Minister said.
“I gave instructions to the higher officials to start the work of providing proper compensation for the paddy fields damaged by drought and rain. The Agriculture and Agrarian Insurance Board has already started gathering information related to crops affected by the rain,” he said.
“We will never allow injustice to our farmers. The damage done to these plantations will be properly assessed and steps will be taken to provide compensation,” the Minister said.
