The People’s Action for Free and Fair Elections (PAFFREL) has requested the Elections Commission in a letter to call for the conducting of Local Government Polls.
The tenure of the Local Government institutions, which was to end in March this year was extended for a period of another a year by the then Minister of Provincial Councils and Local Government.
PAFFREL Executive Director Rohana Hettiarachchi in his letter says that, currently the Government is bringing in different amendments that will cause the postponement of the polls. Although some of these amendments are progressive ones, the duration these amendment procedures are taking would postpone the election until further notice.
Accordingly, stating that he believes that the Elections Commission has completed the compilation of the Voters Register of 2022, Hettiarachchi requested the Chairman of the Commission Nimal G. Punchihewa to immediately announce the election.
