The Sri Lanka Paralympic Committee expressed its aspirations to field a team of athletes for the Selection Trial ahead of the 2024 Paris Paralympics, scheduled for February in Dubai, according to an announcement made yesterday.
The Selection Trial, known as the Fazza International Para Athletics Championship, will witness the participation of over 25 countries from the region. This event is a crucial step in the qualification series for eligibility to participate in the upcoming Paralympic Games in 2024 in Paris.
Colonel Deepal Herath, Chairman of the Sri Lanka Paralympic Committee, stated, “To qualify for the Paralympics in 2024, we aim to send more than seven athletes who can meet the qualifying standard.”
Emphasizing the importance of qualification, Col. Herath highlighted that without meeting these criteria, athletes won’t be able to compete in the next Paralympics. The Dubai meet will serve as a platform for athletes to achieve the qualifying standard, and only those who surpass the required mark will secure a spot in the Paralympics.
In addition to the Fazza International Para Athletics Championships, the National Paralympic Committee envisions sending athletes to compete in various sports such as shooting, swimming, table tennis, archery, rowing, badminton, and more during the Qualifier Meets scheduled for the early part of the next year, as disclosed by Col. Herath.
