Parliament adjourned till 9.30 am today

Parliament was adjourned till 9.30 am today as there was an insufficient number of Government MPs in the House.

The Parliament convened yesterday to consider the proposal to increase the Value Added Tax (VAT) from 15 percent to 18 percent.

Samagi Jana Balawega Kurunegala district MP Nalin Bandara raised a question that there is no quorum in the Parliament.

The MP also said that efforts are being made to pass the VAT Amendment Bill in an improper manner.

State Minister of Finance Shehan Semasinghe said that the vote on VAT amendments will be held in the afternoon.

Then Deputy Speaker Ajith Rajapakse stopped the proceedings of the House for a while and rang the bell to call the gathering. Deputy Speaker Rajapakse announced that five minutes after the bell rang, the House would be adjourned until 9:30 am today as 20 members required for the quorum of the Parliament were not present in the chamber.
