Pathfinder Foundation participates at Symposium on China and South Asia

The School of International Studies of the Sichuan University, in association with the China Institute for Strategic Studies and China Centre for South Asian Studies, held a Symposium focusing on South Asia’ in Chengdu, capital of the Sichuan Province of China.

The event was held under the broad theme of ‘China and South Asia in the New Era’, during which issues such as Unprecedented regional and global developments, China-South Asia ties for security and prosperity, Challenges and opportunities in China’s engagement with South Asia and Strategic trust-building measures to overcome uncertainties were discussed.

Many participants from leading think tanks and academic institutions in South Asia, comprising Bangladesh, Bhutan, India, Maldives, Nepal, Pakistan and Sri Lanka, attended the first event organized by the Sichuan University in the post C-19 period. In addition to South Asian representation, participants from the Netherlands, the Russian Federation, the USA, numerous China-based think tanks and leading academic institutions also participated in the event.

The Pathfinder Foundation was represented at the Symposium by its Chairperson, Bernard Goonetilleke. Admiral (Retd.) Jayantha Perera, former Commander of the Sri Lanka Navy and Prof. S. Chaminda Padmakumara, Head of the Department of International Relations of the University of Colombo, were among the Sri Lankan invitees.

Following the Symposium, the Chairman of Pathfinder Foundation and Professor Yao Leye, Vice President of Sichuan University and Director General of China Centre for South Asian Studies, discussed how to promote relations between the two institutions.

The discussion was followed up by signing a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU), relating to the future areas of cooperation between the Pathfinder Foundation and the China Centre for South Asian Studies of the Sichuan University. Professor Huang Yunsong, Associate Dean of the School of International Studies of the Sichuan University and Coordinator of the China Centre for South Asian Studies, was associated with discussing and signing the MoU.
