Pay salaries for those contesting LG Polls – Sajith
“Even though the Minister in charge of the subject had previously promised to pay salaries of the government servants who have given nominations for the Local Government Election, this has still not been done,” Opposition Leader Sajith Premadasa said in Parliament yesterday.
Therefore, he said that he likes to inquire from the government as to why it cannot take a direct decision to pay the salaries and allowances to these candidates. The Opposition Leader questioned whether it is right to deprive the government employees of their salaries because the government does not have the backbone to conduct the elections.
He further said that it is not the fault of government employees to lose their salaries. However, the government has made thousands of government employees orphans with this delay.
He said that the government should consider this as a serious matter and intervene in this matter. The Opposition Leader further said that if it is not possible to give money for the election, then it should at least take the necessary steps to pay the salaries of the government servants properly.
