“People have unparalleled service through free healthcare”
Transport, Highways and Mass Media Minister Dr. Bandula Gunawardhana yesterday donated essential medical equipment worth Rs.700,000 to the Homagama Base Hospital with the funds received for the pandals displayed in Homagama Dharma Rashmi Poson Zone, a concept of Dr. Gunawardhana.
The medical equipment was bought using the money remaining from the donations made during the display of pandals.
The Minister speaking at the event said, “Presently there is a lot of talk about the public health sector. Despite criticism, it is no secret that the majority of the people are provided with an unparalleled service through free healthcare. No matter how many shortcomings exist in both the private and public sector, even the people in the remote areas of the country place more trust in the services provided by the Government hospitals.”
“After independence, most of the Government hospitals in the country were built with the contribution of philanthropists and people who love other people. Hospitals as well as schools were built in that way.”
“Among the existing hospitals in the Colombo district, Homagama Base Hospital can be termed as a hospital that has garnered a reputation for high quality service. Despite many challenges, its staff was able to save a large number of lives during the Covid pandemic. With the aim of further expanding the service provided we are engaged in an effort to make it a national hospital.”
“ As the hospital is located in close proximity to the NSBM Green University and Jayewardenepura University, I believe that this hospital will be able to be modernized in the future with facilities that can be used as a teaching hospital for medical students,” the Minister said.
The Minister also inspected facilities at the hospital including the proposed construction of the Telemedicine unit, Children’s Rehabilitation Unit, and the main operating room.
Homagama Hospital Chief Medical Superintendent Specialist Dr. Jayaruwan Bandara and Homagama PS Secretary Kumuduni Gunathilaka were also present.
