Pesandu wins Chess Grand Prix

Pesandu Liyanage of D.S Senanayake College emerged champion of the 9th Sri Lanka Chess Grand Prix ended yesterday. In the finals he beat S. Sivathanujan of Kokavil Hindu College 1 ½ – ½ to secure the title convincingly. In the double round finals, Pesandu won his 1st game and got a draw to finish the event in the 2nd game. He received a Rs. 60,000 cash award, Gold Medal, and the Champions trophy. Earlier, in the Semi-Finals, he beat Osheen de Silva and came to the finals.

Meanwhile, S Sivathanujan had to be satisfied with the Silver Medal and received Rs. 40,000 in cash as well.

In the Consolation Finals. Osheen De Silva of Sri Lanka Navy beat Vinuda Gunatilake of Royal College 1 ½ – ½. Osheen beat Vinuda in the first round and got a draw in the 2nd round to finish with 1 ½ points also received Rs. 25,000 cash award with the Bronze Medal.

Vinuda had to satisfy with 4th place and a cash award of Rs. 15,000. Buddhika Amarasinghe beat Kosala Amarasinghe and won 5th place and a cash award of Rs. 10,000.

The 9th Sri Lanka Chess Grand Prix 2022, conducted by the Chess Federation of Sri Lanka had two stages, in the first stage, two round Robin events were played with 9 rounds with 9 players. Unfortunately, Surath Wijeratne withdrew from the event after the 1st round.

In the 2nd stage, knock out events of the Semi-finals and finals were played among the top two teams of Group A and B. All knock-out games played given two rounds with, white and Black per each player. (D.R)
