Peterites in smashing 39-0 win over Antonians

St. Peter’s College dished out some dazzling rugby to record a smashing 39-0 victory over St. Anthony’s College in their Inter-Schools Under-19 Division One League Tournament Super Round segment fixture played at Bambalapitiya yesterday.

The unbeaten Peterites played havoc with the Antonian defence during a fine exhibition of fast open rugby as they went on to collect their points from three goals, three tries and one penalty after having led 29-0 at half time.

In fact, the home side made their intentions quite clear from the kick-off and were able to collect the vital bonus point inside the opening 35 minutes of play.

The Peterites ran circles around the Antonian defence during this productive period and made a clear statement by turning the game in their favour even before the short whistle. Even then, it was not the best of starts for the Peterites as they missed an easy penalty in the very first minute of play but from there onwards, they controlled the game with some superb running rugby.

They played in their opponents’ territory for a longer period and opened the scoring in the seventh minute of play when Dineth Ranasinghe added the finishing touches near the corner flag following some good offloads by Sudesh Jayawickrama and Windya de Mel.

Tarindu Kaushal missed the conversion, but thereafter, Yumith Shehara took over the place-kicking duties and fired across a 25-metre penalty to increase the lead to 8-0.

The Antonians suffered a huge blow when their Skipper Sahan Keerthisiri was handed a yellow card and the Peterites grabbed the opportunity to score back-to-back tries with Skipper Ashan Madugaspe doing the honours.

The dynamic third row forward cleverly sneaked through the Antonian defence to score virtually unchallenged after they had successfully won possession from a five-metre line-out.

Madugaspe was in the act once again, this time from a counter-attack as he brushed aside two defenders before falling over under the post for their third try.

Thereafter, centre Sudesh Jayawickrama scored probably the best try of the match when he charged in from mid field, dummied a couple of defenders and powered his way to touch down for the bonus-point try.

Shehara converted all three tries and St. Peter’s were well on their way to a comprehensive victory at half time.

The Antonians were able to put up a brief resistance after the turnaround before the home side broke the deadlock almost 20 minutes into the second half when prop forward Ranidu Ridmal barged over for a push over try.

Winger Pasindu Bandara put the icing on the cake for the Peterites as he found a huge opening in the Antonian defence to touch down for their sixth try of the match.
