Petition against Mudalige taken up only to correct a legal error – AG
The Colombo High Court was yesterday informed by the Attorney General that the petition against Inter-University Student Union Convener Wasantha Mudalige was taken up before the Court only to correct a legal error and not to seek his arrest.
This was informed by Deputy Solicitor General Dilan Rathnayake appearing on behalf of the Attorney General when the appeal petition filed seeking an order revising the Colombo Magistrate’s order to release Wasantha Mudalige who was remanded under the Prevention of Terrorism Act, was taken up before the Colombo High Court.
When the petition was taken up before Colombo High Court Judge Sujeewa Nissanka, the respondent Wasantha Mudalige appeared in Court. Deputy Solicitor General Dilan Ratnayake informed the Court that the petition was requested to be called only to correct a legal error and not to seek his arrest.
Accordingly, the Court ordered written submissions related to the case on June 1.The Attorney General filed this revision application before the Colombo High Court challenging the Colombo Chief Magistrate’s order to release Inter-University Student Union Convener Wasantha Mudalige who was arrested under the Prevention of Terrorism Act, stating that there was insufficient evidence against him.
The Attorney General filed this appeal, ruling that the Colombo Chief Magistrate’s decision to release him was against the law and seeking that it be revised.
