Petition seeking to postpone LG Elections to be taken up on February 23
Motion to expedite the date of the writ petition to postpone the Local Government elections was taken up in court today (20 February). Retired colonel W M Wijesundara filed a writ petition in the Supreme court asking for a postponement of the Local Government Elections due to the current Economic situation in the country. Court had initially ordered further hearing on the matter to be held on the 23 of February. However, as the postal voting was to begin on 22 February, his lawyers submitted a motion to take up the matter on an earlier date due to the urgency of the issue.
Today, when the motion was taken up in court counsel Faiz Musthapa appearing for the petitioner informed the court that there is no reason to support the motion for an expedited date as the postal voting has gotten postponed. The matter will be taken up in court as originally scheduled on the 23 February.
Motion was heard by bench consisting of Justice S. Turairaja and Justice Shiran Gunaratne of the Supreme Court today.
