The loss caused by the fire that broke out last Friday at Maulana Building, Second Cross Street, Colombo Fort, had not been ascertained as yet.
A senior Police officer stated that there were 50 shops in this six-storey building and only 27 shops were occupied at the time of the fire. Investigations have revealed that the fire started from Tanisha Textiles on the ground floor of this building. The Police say that the fire broke out in the morning when a little petrol was used to burn coconut shells to burn incense.
It is said that the fire broke out after the petrol can fell on the floor due to the fault of an employee.
At least 23 people were hospitalized due to minor burn injuries and inhaling smoke.
According to Colombo Fort Police, the fire that broke out on the lower floor spread to the top floor of the building and destroyed almost all the shops there.
It is suspected that millions of rupees worth of property has been destroyed based on the preliminary investigations carried out by the Police.
Several other shops that were adjacent to the clothing store in the building that caught fire were also severely damaged in the fire, according to the Police.
