The Public Health Inspectors’ Union (PHIU) carried out a token strike yesterday (23) over several demands made by the Intermediate Management and the Executive Board of the Union.
The strike was aimed at drawing attention to not providing positive solutions to various burning issues that are faced by the PHIs islandwide.
Accordingly, members of the PHIU conducted an islandwide token strike yesterday (23), as per communiqu‚ released by PHIU Secretary Shanaka Bopitiyage.
The decision to launch the token strike was taken at a Union meeting held on Sunday (22) Head of the Union Upul Rohana said.
According to the Union, one of the key concerns is the failure to increase the mileage rent and transport allowance that is provided for field duties carried out. These allowances have not increased based on the rising cost of living, fuel prices and motorcycle maintenance costs that have led to financial difficulties for the Public Health Inspectors across the country.
However, selected health institutions, the port, airport, blood bank, maternity hospitals, children’s hospitals, kidney units were not hampered by the token strike.
