Social activist Piyath Nikeshala, former MP J. Sri Ranga and four others were released today (7) following instructions from the Attorney General in connection with the arson attack on former President Ranil Wickremesinghe’s private residence.

The case relates to the May 9, 2022 incident, during the ‘Aragalaya’ protest movement, when the residence was set on fire and the suspects were named in connection with the incident.

Several suspects had previously been discharged from the case following advice from the Attorney General.

When the case was taken up before Colombo Fort Magistrate Pasan Amarasena today, the Attorney General advised that the remaining six suspects, including activist Piyath Nikeshala and former MP J. Sri Ranga, could be released.

The court also lifted the overseas travel bans imposed on all 29 suspects in connection with the case, which had been in place for approximately 29 months.

Speaking to the media outside the court following his release, activist Piyath Nikeshala said he was relieved to regain his freedom after prolonged legal proceedings.

He also expressed sadness that his father, who had supported him throughout the case, had passed away and was therefore unable to witness his release. (Newswire)
