Platform to explore Chinese market
Sri Lanka’s Embassy in Beijing coordinated the participation of Sri Lankan exhibitors at the seventh China-South Asia Exposition and 27th China (Kunming) Import and Export Fair held recently. The Commerce Department under the Trade, Commerce and Food Security Ministry, with the support of Sri Lanka’s Embassy in Beijing organized the participation of 58 Sri Lankan companies with over 75 representatives to promote Sri Lankan products at China-South Asia Exposition held for five days in Kunming. This was the first opportunity that Sri Lankan companies received to showcase their products at the exposition after three years.
The companies promoted a range of products such as gems and jewellery, Ceylon tea, confectionery, processed food, cashew, spices, coconut kernel products, Sri Lankan batiks and handicraft.
Trade, Commerce and Food Security Minister Nalin Fernando led a delegation for the Kunming Expo and encouraged Sri Lankan companies to promote Sri Lankan products in the consumer market in China. The Expo provided an opportunity to understand about the dynamic E-commerce and Social Media marketing strategies that have been utilized to promote Sri Lankan products.
Minister Fernando held a bilateral meeting with the Commerce Department of Yunnan Province and highlighted the close collaboration established by Sri Lanka, particularly with the Yunnan Province. The Kunming Expo has been a major trade expo over the years and could be a great platform for strengthening bilateral trade collaboration. It also provided an opportunity to discuss the areas of market expansion of Sri Lankan products, market access for new products and capacity building that required entering into the Chinese market.
A bilateral meeting was held between the officials of the Commerce Department of Sri Lanka and the Commerce Department of Yunnan Province and the Commercial Counsellor of the Sri Lanka’s Embassy in Beijing.
