Plucker succumbs midway down coconut tree

Horana Police said that a person who was climbing down from a coconut tree died suddenly while seated on his climbing apparatus which had been wrapped around the trunk of the tree. P. A. Sanjaya Priyankara, a father of three in Pokunuwita, Welikala died in this manner.

The Police said that the deceased was engaged in picking coconuts and yesterday (20) when he was picking coconuts from a coconut tree at a height of about 60 feet, in a garden in Thibbotugoda area of Pokunuwita, Welikala, this unfortunate death had taken place.

Police said further that when the owner of the garden inquired about the sudden stop while descending from the coconut tree, at about 35 feet, the deceased was seen sitting near the top of

the tree on his climbing apparatus which was wrapped around the trunk coconut tree at a height of about 25 feet, but Police said he had not responded.

Then the relatives of the deceased had been informed about it and they had been called to the spot. Based on a complaint made to 119 Police emergency, Police officers, had come and taken action to call the officers of the Fire Department of the Horana Municipal Council to the scene.

Horana Base Hospital Coroner Sumedha Gunawardena had also been summoned and on his orders, Police said that they took the body to the ground.

The post-mortem examination of the deceased is scheduled to be held at Horana Base Hospital.
