PM intervenes to solve garbage problem in Beruwala

A special discussion was held at the Parliament complex yesterday (09) to solve the serious health problem that has arisen by the dumping of waste collected in the jurisdiction of the Beruwala Municipal Council, on a land in Waththimirajapura village.

This discussion was held based on a request made by SJB MP Imtiaz Bakeer Markar to Prime Minister Dinesh Gunawardena in Parliament.

It was attended by State Minister of Fisheries, Piyal Nishantha, officials of the Local Government Ministry, Beruwala Divisional Secretariat, Beruwala Municipality, Urban Development Authority, Police, National Health Institute, the Provincial Council Waste Management Authority and Central Environment Authority and representatives of all relevant institutions, who had been summoned.

Accordingly, the Prime Minister instructed the responsible officials to visit the Beruwala area next Tuesday (14), check and dispose the collected garbage immediately to a suitable place, and then classify the garbage correctly and dispose of it properly in order to protect the health of local residents.

State Minister Piyal Nishantha also suggested commencing a regular garbage recycling project by using the land that is currently being used for dumping of garbage.

Parliamentarian Imtiaz Bakeer Markar thanked the Prime Minister for holding the discussion and requested officials to act according to the dates mentioned.
