The arson attack on the private residence of acting President Ranil Wickremesinghe was a sinister plan by Samagi Jana Balawegaya (SJB) Leader and Opposition Leader Sajith Premadasa, United National Party (UNP) General Secretary Palitha Range Bandara said.
Addressing a press conference yesterday, he said that there is evidence to claim the SJB’s involvement in the incident and they could have even harmed the life of Wickremesinghe if he had been inside.
“The CID is investigating the incident.Premadasa’s sister Dulanjali had been seen at the site. Intentionally or unintentionally, a private TV channel also fanned the flames,” he said.
Commenting on the present situation, he said the Constitution has to be followed in the absence of the President in the country.
“Wickremesinghe has taken up a temporary post. Parliament should elect a new President when it meets next week. If there is a more suitable person than Wickremesinghe, he could be appointed by following the due procedure,” he said.
He added that UNP Deputy Leader Ruwan Wijewardene has been nominated by Wickremesinghe to discuss with the protesting youth.
