PNB sleuths in noon drama arrest three near CME

Police Narcotics Bureau (PNB) officers yesterday arrested a businessman who came to collect a parcel containing five kilogrammes of the narcotic drug Kush, which was sent from the United States to the Colombo Central Mail Exchange (CME) under a fake address and two Postal Department employees who assisted him. The businessman came to take collect the parcel with a Postal employee yesterday afternoon where two shots were also fired in the attempt to arrest them near the Central Mail Exchange.

The Police Narcotics Bureau sources said that the officers of the PNB were in a three-wheeler in civvies near the Central Mail Exchange after receiving information about the parcel and while going to arrest the two suspects who came to the place in a car, two shots were fired as the two had resisted arrest. Police say that two shots were fired and both of those shots hit the ground. No one was injured in the incident. Police officers had taken the two arrested suspects in the three-wheeler while leaving the car behind. A senior Police officer said that the Police Narcotics Bureau had taken the car keys into Police custody and since the car was not related to the case, it was left at that place with the expectation of being picked up later.

The Police Narcotics Bureau said that the arrested businessman is a 31-year-old resident of Nugegoda. News had circulated that a group of civilians who came in a three-wheeler stopped a car and shot at it and took the two occupants in a three-wheeler, raising suspicions that this was the work of an organized crime gang. That is because the Police station in the locality where the incident took place was not aware of the incident until about an hour had passed. Therefore, special Police teams reached the place where the car was abandoned and even started an investigation to find out who the kidnapped the persons in the car were. The Police Narcotics Bureau informed authorities about it, confirming that this incident was not the work of a criminal gang and local Police were made aware of the PNB operation.

Police Narcotics Bureau disclosed that the Kush Narcotics parcel from America was released from the Central Mail Exchange on Saturday 21.It has been revealed that it was released by a Postal employee who brought an authorised letter claiming to be the authorized representative of the person who sent the parcel to Sri Lanka. It is said that when the parcel was released after Customs inspection and was about to be taken out, it was discovered that it contained the drug called Kush and the Postal worker ran away from the place after the detection while leaving the parcel behind. One of the three arrested is the said to be a Postal Department worker.

Police officers had used the arrested Postal worker to lure the businessman to the CME and had arrested him there.
