Two suspects along with two firearms, a live grenade and three empty ammunition casings were arrested by the Avissawella Police on Wednesday. It is believed that the firearm that was allegedly used to shoot a woman residing in the Karandana Vewila area of the Avissawella Police area in the early hours of February 21.
The police said that a person residing in the Wawila area, who had demanded an amount of 50,000 rupees as ransom from a woman in the same area, shot the woman because she refused to give the ransom.
The woman who was shot is currently undergoing treatment at the Horana Base Hospital. Police said that one of the two suspects arrested by the police is a 39-year-old man nicknamed ‘Mas Vedda’, who shot the 66-year-old woman on the morning of Feb 21, and the other person is his relative. Police have found two 12-bore firearms, a barrel of that type of firearm, a live grenade, 1 live ammunition and 3 empty ammunition casings while in the possession of the two suspects.
