Police explains why seat belt rule was relaxed for children & shorter passengers

DIG Traffic U.P.J. Senadheera has clarified why children under 12 and people below four-and-a-half feet in height are exempt from the standard seat belt requirement.

Referring to the Gazette issued on June 25, 2025, Senadheera said the exemption also applies to people who have been medically advised against wearing a seat belt.

He explained that for shorter passengers, a standard seat belt could run across the neck rather than sit in the correct position, creating a risk of serious injury during an accident.

Senadheera stressed that the exemption does not mean such passengers should travel without protection, noting that suitable alternatives such as lap belts could be used.

He also urged motorists and passengers to take responsibility for their own safety rather than depending solely on police enforcement. (Newswire)
