Police find infant abandoned near shrine

Police found a five-day old infant left near a small shrine, close to the Maliyadeva Len Vihara on Elkaduwa Road in the Wattegama Police Division on Vesak Full Moon Day yesterday.

A team of officers of the Children and Women’s Bureau of the Wattegama Police had gone to the place on information given by the residents and taken the infant into their custody and admitted him to the hospital.

The police said they suspect that the infant would have been there for several hours. The infant who was admitted to the Wattegama hospital was later transferred to the Kandy National Hospital. The Wattegama Police have commenced an investigation to find out who would have left the child at this place.
