The Mahiyanganaya Police said that the woman, who had allegedly abandoned her new born baby on August 16, was arrested yesterday.

She is a mother of five residing in Mahiyanganaya.

The woman who resides in Vavuniya was married and has three children from that marriage. The woman told the police that her husband left her when she was expecting the third child.

She has said that after she came to a house near Mahiyangana, she got married again and had two children from that marriage. She told Police that she became pregnant for the fourth time even though she took all necessary measures to prevent pregnancy.

Meanwhile, one of her children was admitted to Mahiyangana Hospital due to an injury that occurred the other day. The mother in question had to stay with her child at the hospital.

However, she had delivered the child while she was at the hospital. She has stated that she decided to run away from the hospital with the child without informing anyone about it.

She had tried to jump over the parapet wall of the hospital while putting the child in her armpit. However, the infant had fallen off the wall. Thereafter she had silently returned to the ward where her child was receiving treatment.

Mahiyangana Police acting OIC, Chief Inspector Dehigama said it is a very humane matter and a mother must have many reasons to leave her child. Therefore, in such an incident, the Chief Inspector Dehigama requested that the children should be brought to a hospital or a police station instead of being left on the street and that the police would be ready to receive and assist such children.
