Police identify 12 students involved in attack
Police have identified 12 students involved in the attack on the Peradeniya University’s former Vice-Chancellor, Senior Professor of Earth Science Department Athula Senaratne and his son Vidura Senarathne and causing damage to his official residence.
According to Police, these identifications were made by examining the CCTV footage installed at the Professor’s house and based on the statements obtained from the Professor and his son who were assaulted.
So far, information has been revealed that a group of students from the Peradeniya University’s Faculty of Science and Arts were involved in this attack.
CCTV footage shows one of the university students involved in the attack breaking the back door of the Professor’s house and entering it with a board.
The student has been taken into Police custody.
Central Province Senior Deputy Inspector General of Police Sanjeeva Dharmaratne said that steps will be taken to arrest the students involved in the incident at the earliest.
Meanwhile, Peradeniya University Media Spokesperson, Acting Vice Chancellor, Professor Terence Madujith says that the university initiated an investigation into the incident of assaulting of the former Vice-Chancellor of Peradeniya University Senior Professor Atula Senaratne and his son and cause of damage to his official residence.
He said a decision had been taken to cancel the studentship of these students until the investigations related to the incident are completed.
