Police Intelligence Officer, accomplice arrested over drug possession

An Intelligence Officer working in the Western Province Intelligence Division and another person involved in drug trafficking were arrested by a group of officers of the Intelligence Division of the Police Special Task Force on Saturday for possession of drugs.

The arrested persons were a Police Constable working at the Mirihana Sub-Unit attached to the Western Provincial Intelligence Division and a resident of National Flats at Thimbirigasyaya Road, Colombo 5. The Police Constable is a resident of Midigama, Weligama.

A team of Police officers including Inspector R.A.D.A. Ranasinghe had conducted a raid in Pitakotte and taken into custody, the suspect Pavara Mandala Ranawaka who had arrived at a nearby hotel in a motor vehicle, under the guidance of Intelligence Division Officer-In-Charge Chief Inspector Nadeeka Silva based on information received by officers of the Intelligence Division of the Police Special Task Force. The suspect had 64 grams of the ‘ICE’ drug in his possession.

The suspect was interrogated at length and when the bedroom of his apartment complex was searched, another 10 grams of ICE was found there.

During questioning, the suspect had said that he received the ICE drug from a resident of Weligama with the coordination of another person.

The Special Task Force who later discovered that the other person was a Police Constable attached to the Mirihana Sub-Unit of the Western Province Intelligence Division and later arrested him at the Mirihana Police Precinct.

When the Special Task Force took the mobile phone of the Police Constable and checked it, it was revealed that the Police Constable in question was involved in drug trafficking on a large-scale.

The two suspects together with the seized drugs and mobile phone have been handed over to the Police Narcotics Bureau for further investigation.
