A group of seven persons including two women turned the lights off and assaulted a group of Bulathsinghala Police officers in the dark who went to arrest a trafficker for illegally distilling and selling alcohol.
Police say that these seven suspects who are members of the same family were arrested. The two women are aged 20 and 46 years. Police say that the other suspects are 24, 26, 27, 34 and 60 years old.
A Sub-Inspector, a Sergeant and two Constables of the anti-corruption division attached to the Bulathsinghala Police Station conducted a raid in the Welgama area of Aluthketiya yesterday (6) evening according to information received regarding illegal liquor smuggling.
The Police say that while going to arrest the main suspect with two Goda Barrels, he fled from the place.
As the suspect had fled to his residence, the Police team went there to arrest the person. There, the Police say that the relatives of the suspect did not allowed the Police officers to enter the house by behaving aggressively.
Later, a team of officers including the Officer in Charge arrived there and when the officers entered the house, the residents cut off the electricity in the house and attacked the officers in the dark and the suspect took advantage of the opportunity and ran away.
Two Police officers injured in this attack have been admitted to Bulathsinghala Hospital.
