Police on the beat this season, warns against drunk driving

Sri Lanka Police have tightened security throughout the country for the safety of the public during the year-end festive season beginning today, Police Media Spokesman, SSP Nihal Thalduwa said. He said the Inspector General after reviewing the information gathered through police intelligence sources, has instructed all the Senior DIGs in-charge of provinces and other senior police officers to provide ample security to crowded places, especially on the Christmas day.

He also warned the public to be aware of errant traders, thieves, jewellery snatchers, food items that are not suitable for consumption, counterfeit money and also offers and rewards received from unverified sources through social media during this period.

Police intelligence officers have been deployed at different places in different areas to net the wrongdoers, but the public is urged to be vigilant of possible incidents, he said.

The SSP said the public is urged to contact the police emergency hotline 119 or reach the nearest police officer or the police station or contact the nearest police station in case of any emergency during this period.

The police traffic division will also conduct countrywide operations round the clock to net drunk drivers and traffic law violators for the safety of the public during the season.

Motorists are requested to drive vehicles very carefully, obey road rules, prevent from violating the speed limits and from reckless driving in order to prevent possible accidents, he said.SSP Thalduwa said the public should not engage in swimming or any other adventurous activities under the influence of alcohol. The managements of the hotels and lodges are requested to take every precautionary action to prevent guests from entering pools under the influence of alcohol. He also said that the health guidelines issued by the health authorities are effective from December 16-31 and therefore, they are applicable for this festive season too.
