Police sergeant remanded
The Akkaraipattu Magistrate has remanded the Police sergeant arrested in connection with the shooting incident at the Thirukkovil Police Station where four Police officers were killed, until January 6.
Four police officers were killed in a series of shootings by a sergeant attached to the Thirukkovil Police Station at around 11p.m. on Friday night (24). The OIC and three others were injured in the incident and are currently receiving treatment at the Ampara General Hospital.
A special investigation has already been launched into the incident under the supervision of the Senior DIG in charge of the Eastern Province and the Ampara SSP.
Police headquarters said the relevant sergeant who arrived at the Police station had snatched the firearm of the Police officer who was on duty at the main entrance of the Police station and had fired at the officers inside the Police station.
The OIC had been returning to the Police station in a jeep when the suspect had fired at the jeep as well.
Three Police officers were killed on the spot in the shooting. Among the dead were a Police Sergeant, two Police Constables and a Police Constable driver.
The Police Sergeant who had fired the shots had fled to his hometown of Athimale in his private cab and later surrendered to the Athimale Police station with two T-56 assault rifles and 19 rounds of ammunition.
The Athimale OIC had arrested him and handed over to the Ampara Police for further investigations.
Although it has been revealed that the shooting had taken place as a result of a dispute over duty leave, a special Police team is conducting further investigations to find out the exact details.
