Police sergeant suspended for soliciting bribe
A sergeant of the Akmeemana Police was suspended for demanding a bribe of Rs, 5000 to return the licence and documents of a drunk motorcyclist.
Galle Assistant Superintendent of Police Upula Senevirathne suspended this officer Saturday (5), with effect from Thursday (3). On June 31, the police sergeant attached to Akmeemana Police Station stopped a drunk motorcyclist at Narawala Mola Junction. The sergeant told the rider to pay Rs 5,000, for the release of his licence, and avoid the legal procedure.
Investigations reveal that, when the rider pleaded his inability to pay the bribe solicited, the sergeant retained the documents and the rider’s license in his custody, until the money was brought.
The sergeant was suspended, consequent to the motorcyclist’s complaint to the police regarding this.
