The Police Department has planned to open 250 rehabilitation centers this month with the aim of simultaneously rehabilitating 10,000 drug addicts.

Under this programme, which is planned to be implemented with the support of the Maha Sangha and Catholic, Islamic and Hindu priests, centres will be established to house 50 persons addicted to narcotic drugs at a centre.

Inspector General of Police (IGP) Deshabandu Tennakoon speaking to journalists in Kandy said that the purpose of the new programme is to help young people, addicted to drugs recover from the addiction through a practical and scientific programme prepared with the support of the Dangerous Drugs Control Board.

The IGP said that there are 100,000 people in the country who are addicted to all kinds of drugs, but the capacity to rehabilitate them annually is about 4700 and emphasised that it is not at all reasonable.

He said that rehabilitation in the camps have not yielded desired results like what has happened at the Kandakadu centre.

The IGP also stated that the necessary food and other facilities for those referred to the treatment centers will be met with the donations of civil society and religious dignitaries and organisations.
