Police to step up security at 24 Colombo apartment complexes amid drug trafficking concerns

Sri Lanka Police, in collaboration with the Urban Development Authority (UDA), has decided to strengthen security measures at 24 apartment complexes in and around Colombo, following concerns over drug trafficking and damage to public property.
The decision was reached during a special discussion held at the Colombo Deputy Inspector General’s Office, chaired by DIG in charge of the Colombo Range Nishantha de Zoysa, on the instructions of Inspector General of Police Priyantha Weerasooriya.
According to Police, the discussion focused on introducing a coordinated security programme to safeguard the lives and property of residents living in housing complexes developed under the Urban Regeneration Project, while maintaining law and order in the surrounding areas.
Concerns were raised over alleged drug trafficking activities within certain apartment complexes, which have also been linked to incidents of damage to public property.
Accordingly, Police and the UDA agreed to introduce several security measures, including establishing new police posts, strengthening regular police patrols and strictly enforcing laws relating to offences against public property.
Plans were also discussed to renovate existing police posts and identify suitable locations for additional posts, in consultation with the UDA.
Following proposals presented by UDA Director General Engineer Damith Dissanayake, instructions were issued to the relevant police stations to implement the proposed security arrangements.
The meeting was attended by senior police officers, including representatives from the Colombo Central and Colombo South Police Divisions, Officers-in-Charge of police stations, and officials of the Urban Development Authority. (Newswire)
