Policeman and criminal wanted for alleged assault

Police are yet to arrest a Police officer and an underworld criminal allegedly involved in brutally assaulting the 22-year-old son of a businessman at a hotel in Nainamadama, Wennappuwa on December 12.

The young man was hit on the head with a broken bottle and was also stabbed in the waist with a broken bottle. The young man was attacked with a bottle by Podi Kumara, who is identified by the Police as an underworld leader staying in Katunayake.

The Police officer who assaulted the young man has been identified as a Police Inspector attached to the Western Province North Crime Division.Wennappuwa Police say that the Police officer, the underworld leader and his acolyte have fled after the attack. Police sources also said a travel ban against the Police officer has been obtained.
