Policy Framework on Food Security Draft presented to National Council
The Draft of the Conceptual Policy Framework on Food Security (Agriculture, Animal Husbandry and Fisheries) was presented to the Sub Committee on Identifying the Priorities in Formulation of Short-, Medium- and Long-Term National Policies of the National Council.
This conceptual policy framework was presented when the Sub Committee on Identifying the Priorities in Formulation of Short-, Medium- and Long-Term National Policies of the National Council met recently under the chairmanship of MP Namal Rajapaksa in Parliament.
A working committee headed by Asanka Navaratne, Member of Parliament was appointed to prepare a national policy for food security (agriculture, animal husbandry and fisheries) and the working committee met for approximately eight months to prepare this policy framework.
This conceptual policy has been prepared jointly by the secretaries of various ministries including Irrigation Ministry, Agriculture Ministry, Fisheries Ministry, Environment Ministry, Plantations Ministry, Tourism and Lands Ministry, Forests and Conservation Ministry, Education Ministry, Health Ministry, Trade Ministry, Commerce and Food Security and Agriculture Ministry of the North West Province, as well as the University Grants Commission, the Food and Agriculture Organization, the Attorney General’s Department and the Legal Draftsman’s Department.
It contains a range of medium and long-term ideas to ensure food security in the country.
Accordingly, MP Namal Rajapaksa, Chair of the Sub Committee on Identifying the Priorities in Formulation of Short-, Medium- and Long-Term National Policies of the National Council stated that the conceptual policy framework on food security will be presented to the National Council and through the Council, to Parliament.
He further mentioned that, in the future, the relevant ministries will be informed and the necessary legal amendments will be made for allocating institutional allocations.
Members of Parliament MP Asanka Navaratne, MP Sagara Kariyawasam, Secretaries to certain Ministries and Government officials were present at this Committee meeting held.
