Poor Quality Baby Diaper Complaints Trigger Raids: 5 Businesses Fined

Five businesses have been fined a total of Rs. 140,000 for selling and distributing baby and adult diapers without the required importer information, following investigations prompted by consumer complaints about diapers deteriorating and tearing during use.

The Consumer Affairs Authority (CAA) said its officers conducted investigations and raids after receiving complaints that certain baby diapers purchased from the market were deteriorating and tearing during use.

Investigations found that five businesses had displayed or distributed diapers without the importer’s name, address, telephone number or website information, in violation of Direction No. 85.

The cases were heard before the Colombo Chief Magistrate’s Court on September 16, where the defendants pleaded guilty to the charges.

The court also ordered the destruction of the entire stock of diapers produced as case exhibits, comprising at least 87 packs, including 81 packs of baby diapers and baby pants and six packs of adult protective diapers.

The CAA advised consumers to check importer details and other labeling information when purchasing diapers and to retain packaging and receipts if they encounter quality-related problems.
