Port Community System a must – Minister
A Port Community System is a must for a port to compete, increase efficiency and bring down corruption, Minister of Ports, Shipping and Aviation Nimal Siripala de Silva said.
The Minister made these comments at a full day workshop for establishing a Port Community System for the Sri Lanka Ports Authority (SLPA) on August 16, 2023 held at the Hilton Hotel, Colombo.
The Minister said that the Port Community System will enable the Sri Lankan port sector to identify new global trends in the maritime business and all role players and stakeholders should work together for its success. A Port Community System (PCS) is an electronic platform that connects the multiple systems operated by various organizations that operate in a port community and it will optimise, automate, and manage the port and logistics processes through a single submission of data, engaging with all stakeholders in the chain in order to ensure sustainable and efficient electronic exchange of data and prevent use of unnecessary and costly paper procedures and reduce the duplication of data input.
Sri Lanka Ports Authority (SLPA) with the technical and financial assistance from ADB is working towards the implementation of a Port Community System for Sri Lanka to facilitate trade across and through its ports and aims to become the most efficient and reliable port in the Southeast Asian region.
KPMG SRI LANKA, a joint venture with the Port of Rotterdam (POR), Netherlands acts as the Consultant to the Project. The Port Community System will also support wider trade facilitation measures in Sri Lanka and the wider region.
Secretary to the Ministry of Ports, Shipping and Aviation K.D.S. Ruwanchandra, SLPA’s Chairman Keith D. Bernard, Managing Director Prabath J. Malavige, representatives of the ADB, KPMG Sri Lanka and the Port of Rotterdam (POR), Netherlands and a number of representatives of PCS stakeholder institutions also attended the occasion.
