Postal service to be digitized and its service effectiveness increased

The World Postal Day which is held yearly on October 9, carries the theme “Together for Trust” this year. The national celebration is scheduled to be held today at 9:30 a.m. at the Boyagane Salute reception hall Kurunegala.

Acting Minister of Mass Media, Shantha Bandara, while attending a press conference held at the Government Information Department yesterday, said that Sri Lanka Post, the pioneer of local communication, will celebrate the 149th World Postal Day with many ceremonies.

The Minister said that this department, which has the fourth largest number of employees in Sri Lanka with 27,000 employees, provides multi-tasking services to the people and will digitize and increase service effectiveness in the future.

Also, although this department was named as a loss-making institution, this year it has managed to achieve 71% of its revenue target by August 31 and the way to build a financially strong department in 2025 has been opened, the Minister said.

He stated that since the Ordinance Act passed in 1908 is still in operation in the Postal Department, the necessary drafts for a new Act will be prepared by the legal department for the changes that should occur under the current technology and globalization. Moreover, the Minister further said that the drafts of 2 service conditions related to this have been directed to the State Commission to be revised and adopted.

Also, the Postmaster General S.R.W.M.R.C. Sathkumara mentioned that speed post courier service; EMS and International Mail will be developed and presented as value added services. Not only that the Deputy Postmaster General (Operations) D.A. Rajitha K. Ranasinghe said that the E-commercialization will enable the postal department to provide more than eighty services.

Deputy Postmaster General (Development) G.C.I. De Silva said that the department will be strengthened through new projects and the Kandy Local Council has already entered into an agreement with the Postal Department to pay the assessment and hopes to enter into an agreement with every local council in the future.
