Postponing polls reflects Govt’s inability to face the people – SJB
The Samagi Jana Balawegaya (SJB) expressed concern over not conducting of elections at the correct time and postponement of elections reflects the existing Government’s inability of facing the people mainly due to the non-fulfilling of pledges they promised.
Opposition and SJB leader Sajith Premadasa made these remarks at a public meeting held at the New Town Hall, Colombo.
The Opposition Leader said that the postponement of the Provincial Council Election also reflects that the Government cannot face the people when the prices of essential commodity items have rapidly gone up and the people are facing immense economic hardships due to this.
He said if the Government has duly performed its duties for the economic development in the country then the Government should not fear to hold any election.
“A large number of people voted for the Government at the last Presidential Election with the sole objective of creating an economically developed country,” he said.
He further said the Government should not get involved with the Rs.3,000 million money lying at the Employees’ Provident Fund (EPF) for various other projects. Premadasa said using EPF funds for other purposes means the Government indirectly try to rob poor people’s money that are in their EPF accounts.
The Opposition Leader also said that creating an unnecessary fertilizer shortage the Government drastically lowered the income of poor farmer communities.
“In addition the salary issues of teachers were also dragged number of months and this completely destroy the education of children in the country,” he said. Premadasa finally urged the Government to start development projects to generate Government’s income rather than touching the poor people’s EPF money as it is the only solution to bring down the escalating prices of commodity items.
