Electricity supply has been restored in several areas of Colombo, Gampaha, Galle and Badulla following a nationwide power outage that affected Sri Lanka on Saturday (October 17), according to the National System Operator (NSO).
Meanwhile, all three power generation units at the Norochcholai Coal Power Plant have been shut down following the power failure, according to the plant’s management.
The nationwide blackout occurred after instability in the national electricity grid caused a total system failure on Saturday morning.
The National System Operator said efforts were underway to restore electricity supplies in stages.
Authorities have also requested owners of rooftop solar power systems to disconnect their installations until further notice to support efforts to stabilise and restore the national grid.
The shutdown of all three units at Norochcholai, one of the country’s major electricity generation facilities, adds to the challenges facing authorities as they work to restore normal supply.
However, there has been no official confirmation of when the Norochcholai units will resume operations or when electricity will be fully restored across the country.
The NSO has yet to announce a timeline for the complete restoration of the national grid. (Newswire)
