Practical tests at universities hampered by non-academic staff’s strike
A large number of undergraduates are facing problems due to the prolonged strike of university non-academic staff, which has disrupted practical tests in many universities.
This situation has arisen due to the paralysis of most of the work in the university laboratories, which is generally done by non-academic staff. Besides, this situation has badly affected the holding of final and semester examinations at universities.
University Grants Commission (UGC) Chairman Senior Professor Sampath Amaratunge said that due to the strike of the non-academic employees, there has been some obstacle to the practical tests of university students. Amaratunge said that if this situation continues, some alternative course of action will have to be taken regarding the practical tests.
Amaratunga said that even though the non-academic staff are on strike, there is no problem in paying the salaries of the academic staff and others and therefore the salaries will be paid as scheduled; only non-academic staff members on strike would not be paid.
Even though the non-academic staff are on strike, lectures are continuing as usual in almost all universities. By yesterday, 43 days have passed since the strike of university non-academic employees started. The non-academic staff are on continuous strike seeking a solution for salary anomalies and several other demands. The non-academic staff allege that they have not received a positive solution for their issues so far.
