Seekkuge Prasanna, who hit back to back three sixers in the final over bowled by Lahiru Kumara, making an unbeaten 32 in just six balls, guided Colombo Stars to get a thrilling five-wicket win with two balls to spare against Kandy Warriors in their LPL match played at the R. Premadasa International Cricket Stadium yesterday.
Colombo Stars chased a target of 146 runs while Prasanna and Sherfane Rutherford had to get 31 runs in the last two overs. The inform batter Dinesh Chandimal once again scored 44 in 27 balls with four boundaries and a six, but his departure made some expectations for Kandy Warriors. However, number 7 batter Prasanna realised this tough situation and made his usual hard-hitting innings to get their most wanted win with two balls to spare.
They wanted to get 16 runs in the final over but Prasanna struck three consecutive sixes off Lahiru Kumara to get the superb victory. Prasanna was named ‘Man of the Match’ with his unbeaten 32 in six balls including six sixes.
Earlier, Kandy Warriors openers Charith Asalanka (28) and Kennar Lewis (62) made a good foundation by adding 77 runs in 8.1 overs and Naveen- Ul -Uaq made a breakthrough to dismiss Asalanka who hit 28 in 18 balls with 3 fours and six.
Lewis, the Jamaican right-hander, made a superb batting display to complete his fluent knock of 62 in 44 balls striking 6 sixes and 2 fours was dismissed off the slow ball from Dushmantha Chameera in 12th over while wicketkeeper Dinesh Chandimal took a superb diving catch to dismiss Lewis and that was the prize wicket for Colombo Stars. However, Kandy middle-order batters couldn’t maintain good momentum and wickets fell at regular intervals to struggle their innings during 12 overs.
Skipper Angelo Perera (2), Kamindu Mendis (8), Ravi Bopara (2) all keystroke makers couldn’t make as they expected while Colombo Stars bowlers made good pressure to take last 8 wickets with conceding only 69 runs. The experience paceman Dushmantha Chameera was the pick of the bowlers for Colombo Stars taking 4 for 35 in his four-over spell.
