National Council with other Parties to elect Cabinet:

Former President and Sri Lanka Freedom Party leader Maithripala Sirisena said President Gotabaya Rajapaksa had agreed to establish a new system of government that will appoint a new Prime Minister and a new Cabinet.

Addressing a media briefing held yesterday afternoon he said that a National Council will be formed as a preliminary stage and a limited Cabinet will be elected through it.

He added that other political Parties representing Parliament will be sent written notifications inviting them to form the Council.

Sirisena said the new Cabinet will consist of 15 to 20 Ministers adding that the National Council will be vested with the responsibility and authority to prioritise the important matters that need to be addressed under an interim-administration.

“The discussion with the President was successful as he agreed to the formation of an Interim Government under a new Prime Minister. The people are on the streets and we as a government that once governed this country, went to meet with the President to find a way to save these suffering people. There is a common opinion of the people regarding the establishment of an Interim Government. The three Chief Prelates also called for the establishment of an Interim Government by inviting all political Parties. All sections of the country also called for the same. Hence, we spoke on behalf of all these sections.”

He further said that the President had made the agreement during a meeting with the 11 Independent Parties of the government that was held yesterday morning.

The 11 Independent Parties of the government, including the SLFP, had recently quit the Government and had informed their decision to remain independent in Parliament until an All-Party Interim Government is established to resolve the current national crisis in Sri Lanka.
