Though the world is in the age of e-commerce, the initiation of e-commerce in Sri Lanka has been slow in picking up, said President Ranil Wickremesinghe at the opening of the Daraz head office in Colombo.

“To overcome this I met the State Minister of ICT, Kananka Herath and other officials and discussed how we can start and accelerate this process of digitalization and how to pave the way for a digital economy. I requested them to submit a report within a month to go ahead. We have made every effort in digitalisation. I don’t think we really need to reinvent the process. Because what takes place in Tamil Nadu, South India would be more than convenient for us if we can use it here. I must confess that I have followed Daraz on and off on Social Media.

However, many Sri Lankans, particularly the youth, will undoubtedly order and use several goods from your portal at least once in this global process. But your presence here and the growth of Daraz in Sri Lanka shows Sri Lanka’s potential for e-commerce and you all have shown the way. You all must be commended for expanding it so fast, as without you all this would not be possible.

Managing Director of Daraz Sri Lanka, Rakhil Fernando said, “The aim of the new headquarters was to create a workplace that pushed the boundaries of what an office could be for both our employees and the local tech industry as a whole. We believe that the new Daraz Headquarters is a long-term investment in our employees and we look forward to it being a space that adapts to the ever-changing needs of our energetic workforce.”

At the new Daraz headquarters, the focus on people and the type of work they do is reflected in carefully curated building elements, such as ergonomic furniture, vibrant colour palettes, natural light and ventilation, thermal comfort, and acoustics. Daraz’s innovative office design promotes a balanced and productive work environment.

“A lot of thought was put into the design of the new office space. The design process started with a deep dive into what drives the Daraz workforce and we prioritized developing a work experience that would motivate and excite employees,” Chief Operating Officer of Daraz Sri Lanka Darshika Attanayake, said.
