United Nations Secretary General Antonio Guterres has congratulated President Ranil Wickremesinghe.

Issuing a special congratulatory message to the President on August 3, the Secretary General has said that the leadership of President Ranil Wickremesinghe will be critical in bringing stability and  ensuring an environment conducive to ushering Sri Lanka out of the current challenges the country is facing.

The UN Secretary General acknowledged the President’s commitment to forge a consensus among all political parties in developing a national strategy to address these challenges. The Secretary General also pointed out the importance of encouraging dialogue among all stakeholders, including consultation with the public, as well as respect for the rule of law and fundamental human rights principles.

Secretary General Antonio Guterres welcomed Sri Lanka’s efforts towards women’s political participation and encouraged the President’s leadership to accelerate progress. The UN stressed that it is ready to support the Government and people of Sri Lanka to address their immediate and long-term needs and added that it is looking forward to continue UN’s co-operation to advance peace building, sustainable development and human rights for the benefit of all Sri Lankans.

Meanwhile Japan’s Prime Minister Fumio Kishida has extended his heartiest congratulations to President Ranil Wickremesinghe. In the congratulatory message, the Japanese Prime Minister has said he is happy to see that Ranil Wickremesinghe, who has been dedicated to the economic and social development of Sri Lanka for a long time, become the President.

Expressing confidence in the leadership of the President to create political stability in the country, the Japanese Prime Minister has said he hoped that the negotiations with the International Monetary Fund and the debt restructuring process will proceed successfully.

The Prime Minister of Japan expressing confidence that through economic stability and administrative reforms, the crises faced by the government of Sri Lanka will end very soon has said as a service center in the Indian Ocean, Sri Lanka can be made into a state with great development.

Recalling that the two countries are celebrating 70 years of diplomatic relations, the Japanese Prime Minister has also informed that he is eager to work with President Ranil Wickremesinghe for the development of Japan-Sri Lanka cooperation as well as a free and open Indo-Pacific region.
