Prez Poll: Former MP Ariyanenthran nominated Tamil common candidate
Former Member of Parliament (MP) Pakiyaselvam Ariyanenthran has been nominated as the Tamil common candidate for the upcoming Presidential Election. This decision was announced at a special press conference held at the Selwa Art Gallery in Jaffna yesterday (8).
On July 22 , seven Tamil political parties and Tamil People’s General Assembly comprising seven Tamil civil organisations signed an agreement in Jaffna to field a Tamil common candidate for the 2024 Presidential Election. MPs C. V. Vigneswaran, Selvam Adaikkalanathan, Dharmalingam Siddharthan and other political representatives as well as civil society activists participated in the event.
Accordingly, former MP P.Ariyanenthran and attorney K.V. Thavarasa were proposed to select the Tamil common candidate and the attention of the majority had been focused on P. Ariyanenthran and thereby, he was nominated as the Tamil common candidate.
The Tamil alliance that is backing common candidate P. Ariyanethran comprises Tamil Eelam Liberation Organization (TELO) led by MP Selvam Adaikkalanathan, People’s Liberation Organization of Tamil Eelam (PLOTE) led by MP Dharmalingam Siddharthan, Tamil People’s National Alliance under MP C.V.Vigneswaran, Eelam People’s Revolutionary Liberation Front (EPRLF) led by Suresh Premachandran, Tamil National Party led by N.Sri Kantha, Tamil National Green Organization, Eelam National Democratic Liberation Front (ENDLF) and seven civil organizations.
The Illankai Tamil Arasu Kachchi (ITAK) party has not yet declared its position regarding the Presidential Election and the All Ceylon Tamil Congress (ACTC) is engaged in campaigning for voters to boycott the presidential election.
