Transport, Highways and Mass Media Minister Dr Bandula Gunawardhana yesterday said that he will take a decision if the foreign liquor bar opened in the Homagama area is not removed within a week.

He said that if it not removed, he will take a decision without any concern about his position as a Member of Parliament or Minister as the pride of the people in Homagama is more important to him than anything.

The Minister was speaking after participating in a protest against the opening of a foreign liquor outlet in Pitipana in Homagama . They later participated in Sathyakriya in front of the Avukana statue in Pitipana.

He said that no person was given opportunity to open foreign liquor bar in Homage and action should be taken against Homagama Divisional Secretary and officials for allowing the opening of a liquor shop in Homagama.

He said that the relevant officials had been informed several times not to allow the opening of liquor shops in Homagama. But the people have not been given an opportunity to protest in this regard, the Minister said.

The Minister added that thousands of students are coming to the Pitipana town a day as a number of education institutions including Buddhist and Pali University; other universities are located in the area.

The Minister expressed displeasure about the opening of a foreign liquor bar amidst the stiff opposition from the people living in area.
