Priority is to lower Cost of Living post General Election – NPP Executive Member Chathuranga Abeysinghe
National Executive Member of the National People’s Power (NPP) and Kotte Electorate Organiser Chathuranga Abeysinghe said the NPP government, after the General Elections, will prioritise benefits to the public in terms of lowering the cost of living burden and solving economic issues and market inefficiencies.
Abeysinghe, who heads the NPP’s Industrial Development Policy Committee, and candidate for the Colombo District, speaking to the Daily News, said that the main purpose of the NPP is to uplift the living standard of the common citizen.
“We want to show the people of this country how an accountable government should work towards the prosperity of this country. The national policies that we presented to the people will be implemented soon after the elections. We have already stabilised the economy of the country and our next economic hurdle is to get ratings back. The Bond restructuring has to be started soon and the external Debt Market should give us a positive rating for future investments to come in. That will be a major hurdle for the government from an economic perspective that will be looked into,” he said.
He said the NPP will give concessions to people from the next Budget and will take measures to strengthen the Tax collection.“Immediately, we are planning to go on a Vote on Account for 3 months and the entire Budget will be presented in February or March next year,” he said.
“We are going to consolidate the organisational structure because it is so fabricated and disconnected. After appointing the 25 Cabinet ministers they will look at how they are going to restructure the institutions and facilitate the policy implementation. We appointed heads to key institutions earlier and other institutions need a leadership change. These changes will be implemented immediately,” he said.
“The SME sector which has a Rs. 350 billion Non-Performing Loan problem should be solved and we are going to solve this issue soon,” he said.
