Attorney Manju Sri Chandrasena representing Thilini Priyamali in remand prison over alleged financial frauds done by her yesterday submitted a written submission to the Human Rights Commission of Sri Lanka (HRCSL) urging them to conduct an investigation into the release of statements made by her to the CID and other material related to the case to the media.
The Lawyer pointed out that it was a violation of Priyamali’s human rights as she was still only a suspect in the case and her right to a fair trial must be ensured. They also added that such action was a violation of the rights given to a suspect facing trial under the Constitution of Sri Lanka.
The Attorney in their letter stated that statements given to CID and other material in the possession of the CID related to the case have been released to the media within a short span of time after obtaining them, even before such facts are reported to court.
Going by what has been appearing in the media they pointed out some facts have a resemblance to the statements given by Priyamali to the CID.
The Lawyer said their client has stressed that she had run a legal business and there were some problems related to certain transactions recently due to the current economic situation in the country.
They pointed out that their client was prepared to prove her innocence in Court.
