Probe into assault of Galle prison officer

The Prisons Department has started two investigations into the incident where an officer of the Galle prison was assaulted while returning home from duty.

One of these investigations is being conducted by the Prison Intelligence Unit and the other is being conducted by the Galle Prison.

Prisons Commissioner General Thushara Upuldeniya says that if there are inmates involved in cases of assault or threats to any prison officer, they will be brought before the Prison Tribunal and strict legal action will be taken.

Upuldeniya also points out that if any inmate is found guilty of such an offence, he will be sentenced to five years’ imprisonment for each charge. The Commissioner General of Prisons also said that he has informed the Inspector General of Police in writing to arrest the persons who attacked this prison officer and strictly enforce the law against them.
