Probe into fraud at Kandy and Matale MCs begins
The Central Province Local Government Commissioner has commenced a special investigation, on the advice of Central Province Governor Lalith U. Gamage, regarding the alleged financial irregularities and administrative weaknesses in the Kandy and Matale Municipal Councils and the Hatharaliyadda Regional Hospital.
The Central Province Governor said that these investigations have been launched based on allegations of fraud in several instances: fake receipts for fees were issued to 31 shops in three shopping complexes controlled by the Kandy Municipal Council; the salary was paid to a nurse at the Hatharaliyadda Hospital who had gone abroad; payment of salary for four years to a person who was no longer working at the Kandy Municipality; financial irregularities in the purchase of gas for the crematorium of the Matale Municipality; and the failure of the person who won the tender to build toilets for this municipality failing to pay taxes.
Facts had been revealed regarding these financial irregularities and administrative weakness during an audit. Investigations were launched taking into consideration the revelations made by the media as well.
Preliminary investigations have commenced under the supervision of the Central Province Local Government Commissioner and if it is revealed through these inquiries that any financial irregularities have taken place, Governor Gamage said that legal action will be taken without considering the status of the persons involved.
