Bandaragama Police have initiated an extensive investigation regarding the theft of a gold coin worth more than Rs.4.3 million by a group of robbers who had broken into a house in Welmilla, Bandaragama.
According to the complaint received by the Police regarding the theft, the weight of the stolen gold coin is about 250 grams.
The Police stated that the theft took place between 11.30 p.m. on July 8 and 3.30 a.m. the next day (09). A 57-year-old woman in a complaint lodged with the Police said the theft had taken place while she was at home. Police said that the owners of the house are abroad.
The complainant told the Police that the gold coin was kept in a cupboard of the house. While investigating the matter, Police found that the back door of the house had been forcibly opened and the gold coin stolen from a cupboard in the living room. Police also said that it appears that the theft was committed by someone who obviously knew the location of this coin.
